What Is Technology?
Technology is not just computers and phones. Technology is using knowledge, skills and materials to solve problems and to meet the needs and wants of people. A need is something people cannot do without, like clean water or shelter. A want is something people would like to have, like a faster way to carry water. When a Grade 5 learner builds a stronger paper bridge or designs a better school bag, that learner is doing technology.
The Design Process
Technologists do not simply start building. They follow a process with five steps: Investigate, Design, Make, Evaluate and Communicate. Each step builds on the one before it, so skipping a step often leads to a poor product.
- Investigate means finding out about the problem, looking at similar products, and asking who will use the product.
- Design means planning a solution, often with a labelled drawing, before any material is cut or joined.
- Make means building the product carefully, following the plan and using tools safely.
- Evaluate means testing the product against the original problem to see if it really works.
- Communicate means explaining and showing the finished idea to other people, using drawings, models or words.
Identifying a Problem
Every good design starts with a real problem. For example, learners at a school in Polokwane noticed that their pencils rolled off slanted desks. That is a problem worth solving. Once a problem is identified clearly, the next task is to write a design brief. A design brief is a short, clear sentence that states what must be designed, for whom, and why. A design brief for the pencil problem could be: Design and make a pencil holder that keeps a Grade 5 learner's pencils from rolling off a desk during class.
Why the Steps Matter
Following each step in order helps technologists avoid mistakes. If you skip Investigate and jump straight to Make, you might build something nobody needs. If you skip Evaluate, you will never know whether your product truly solves the problem. In South Africa, engineers and designers use this same process to plan everything from rainwater tanks in rural villages to school furniture that suits small classrooms.
