Chapter 1. What is Geography? Where We Live FREE

Geography is the subject that helps us get to know places and describe where things are. Every day you move from your home to your school and back again. Geography is all about looking at these places, giving them names and saying where they are. In this chapter you learn to talk about where you live and to use simple words that tell someone where a place is.

What geography helps us do

Geography helps us understand the world around us. It teaches us to notice places and to describe them clearly so that other people can find them too.

  • It helps us learn the names of places, such as our street, our town and our country.
  • It helps us describe where things are, such as the shop next to the school.
  • It helps us read maps that show us how to get from one place to another.

Your address

Your address tells people exactly where you live. It is made up of the number of your house, the name of your street, and the name of your town or city. If a friend or a delivery person knows your address, they can find your home.

Comparing where we live

Not everyone lives in the same kind of place. Some friends live in a house, some in a flat and some on a farm. Some live near the school and some live far away. When you compare where you live with where your friends live, you notice that every home is a little different.

Position words

Position words tell us where a place is. We use them all the time without even thinking. Learning them well makes it easy to describe any place.

  • Near and far tell us how close something is.
  • Next to means right beside something.
  • Between means in the middle of two things.
  • Left and right tell us which side something is on.
