Chapter 1. How to Study Geography in Grade 11 FREE
Grade 11 Geography is the year in which you move from describing the world to explaining it. When the Western Cape spent more than R300 million fighting drought during the Cape Town water crisis of 2017 and 2018, geographers had to combine four skills at once: they read weather data, interpreted contour maps of the catchment around Theewaterskloof Dam, measured how the population of the city was growing, and judged whether the use of the resource was sustainable. This chapter does not teach those topics yet. It teaches you how to study them, so that when you reach the chapters on the atmosphere, geomorphology, development and resources you already have a method that works.
1.1 The four content strands and how they fit together
The Grade 11 Geography course is built from a small number of big themes. You will study Climate and Weather (the energy balance, global air circulation, the weather and climate of Africa, and droughts and desertification), Geomorphology (the shape of the land where rock layers are horizontal, inclined, folded or faulted, and how slopes change through mass movements), Development Geography (what development means, how we measure it, and the factors, trade and aid that shape it), and Resources and Sustainability (soil, water and the responsible use of resources). Running through all of these is Mapwork and GIS, the practical skill set you apply to 1:50 000 topographic and orthophoto maps.
The strands are not separate boxes. A drought in the Karoo is a climate topic, but its effect on sheep farming near Graaff-Reinet is a development topic, the dust storms it causes are a soil-erosion topic, and you locate all of it on a topographic map. Studying Geography well means seeing these links, not memorising each strand alone.
1.2 Command words: doing what the question actually asks
Most marks are lost in the examination not because learners do not know the content, but because they do not answer the command word. A command word is the verb that tells you what kind of thinking to show. Learn to recognise them.
- Name, state, list, identify — give a short fact, usually one or two words, worth one mark each.
- Describe — say what something is like, in full sentences, without giving reasons.
- Explain, account for, give reasons — say why or how something happens; every point must include a cause and an effect.
- Compare — discuss two things together, pointing out differences or similarities, not one after the other.
- Evaluate, discuss, assess — weigh up evidence and reach a judgement.
1.3 Reading the mark allocation
The number in brackets after a question is an instruction about how much to write. A good rule is to give roughly one separate point for each mark. For a question worth 8 marks you plan eight distinct points, not one long paragraph. If a calculation in mapwork is worth 3 marks, the marks are usually one for the correct formula, one for substituting the right numbers, and one for the answer with the correct unit, so you must show all three steps.
1.4 Building a study routine that works
Geography rewards regular short sessions far more than one long cram. A workable weekly routine has three parts. First, summarise each new section the same day you are taught it, in your own words, on a single page. Second, draw the diagrams yourself — a cross-section of a synclinal valley or a simple global wind belt sketch is worth more than re-reading the page, because the act of drawing forces you to understand the shape. Third, self-test at the end of the week using past papers, marking your own work against the memorandum so that you learn how marks are awarded.
- Keep a glossary of key terms at the back of your book; Geography is full of precise words such as adiabatic, isobar, gradient and gentrification, and using the wrong word costs marks.
- Practise mapwork every week, not only before a test, because map skills fade quickly when unused.
- Always work in pencil on a traced copy of a map so that you can rub out and try again.
1.5 Using maps, atlases and current events
Keep an atlas open while you study, and locate every place mentioned in your notes. When the news reports a flood in Durban, a heatwave in Upington or load-shedding in Gauteng, ask the four geographer questions: where is it, why there, who is affected, and is the response sustainable. Linking your textbook to real South African events turns abstract theory into something you can remember and explain, which is exactly what the Grade 11 examination rewards.
