Chapter 1. Introduction to Computers and the ICT World FREE
When you tap your phone to send an EFT through the Capitec app, when a learner at a school in Soweto loads a worksheet from Google Classroom, or when a shop assistant at a Pick n Pay in Bloemfontein scans a R49 packet of rice, a computer is doing the work behind the scenes. Computer Applications Technology (CAT) is the school subject that teaches you to understand and use these machines well, so that you become a confident and productive end user. This first chapter gives you the big picture: what a computer is, what ICT means, and why these ideas shape almost every part of life in South Africa today.
1.1 What is a computer and what is ICT?
A computer is an electronic device that accepts data, processes that data according to a set of instructions, produces useful output, and can store the results for later use. The key idea is that a computer is a general-purpose machine: the same laptop can help you type a letter, draw a poster, send an email, or play a video, simply by running different instructions.
ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology. It is the broad field that combines computers (the technology that processes information) with communication tools such as the internet, cellphone networks and email (the technology that moves information between people). When we speak of the ICT world, we mean the whole connected environment of devices, networks, services and people that depends on this technology. South Africa is deeply part of this world: millions of people bank, learn, apply for jobs and access government services such as SARS eFiling and the SASSA grant system online.
1.2 Data and information
Two words that beginners often confuse are data and information, yet the difference is the heart of the subject.
- Data is raw, unprocessed facts and figures that have no meaning on their own. The numbers 35, 28 and 41 are data.
- Information is data that has been processed, organised or given context so that it becomes useful and meaningful. If we say those three numbers are the daily maximum temperatures in degrees Celsius for Upington over three days, the data has become information.
- Processing is the action that turns data into information, for example sorting, calculating an average, or arranging items into a table.
A simple way to remember the flow is the idea of input, processing and output: you put data in, the computer processes it, and information comes out. You will study this cycle in full detail in a later chapter, so here you only need the basic idea that data is the ingredient and information is the finished dish.
1.3 The three things every computer system needs
Every working computer system is built from three cooperating parts. You will meet each in much greater depth later, so this is only an orientation.
- Hardware is the physical part you can touch: the screen, keyboard, mouse, and the components inside the box.
- Software is the set of instructions, called programs, that tell the hardware what to do. Examples are an operating system and a word processor.
- People (the users) operate the system and decide what they want it to achieve. Without a skilled user, even the best hardware and software produce little value.
Some textbooks add data and procedures (the rules and steps people follow) as further elements, but hardware, software and people are the three you must always be able to name.
1.4 Why CAT and ICT skills matter in South Africa
Being able to use ICT confidently is now a basic life and work skill, often called digital literacy. In a country where unemployment is high, a learner who can type a professional CV, build a simple spreadsheet budget, search responsibly for information and communicate by email has a real advantage. Many South African employers, from banks in Sandton to municipalities in the Eastern Cape, expect staff to work with computers every day.
ICT also helps to close distance and cost. A learner in a rural village can complete an online tutorial, and a small business can reach customers across the country through a website. At the same time, the digital divide — the gap between those who have access to devices and data and those who do not — remains a serious challenge, because not every household can afford a laptop or monthly data. Part of being a responsible ICT citizen is understanding both the opportunities and the inequalities.
1.5 Becoming a smart end user
The goal of CAT is not to turn you into a computer engineer but into a skilled end user — someone who chooses the right tool for a task and uses it efficiently, safely and ethically. Throughout this guide you will build the habits of a smart end user:
- Use correct terminology so that you can read manuals and ask for help clearly.
- Think about the task first, then choose suitable hardware and software.
- Work safely and ethically, protecting your own data and respecting other people.
- Keep learning, because ICT changes quickly and yesterday's app is often replaced by a better one.
With this orientation in place, you are ready to look more closely, in the chapters that follow, at how a computer system actually processes information and at the devices and programs that make it all work.
